Recently, OpenAI announced a major partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense, securing a $200 million contract for one year. The purpose of this contract is to develop advanced AI tools for the Department of Defense to help address a range of national security challenges. The Pentagon stated in its announcement that this work will primarily take place in Washington and its surrounding areas, with an expected completion date of July 2026.
This marks OpenAI's first contract with the U.S. Department of Defense, signaling its deep involvement in the national security sector. As the global security landscape continues to evolve, the application of artificial intelligence technology in military and security fields has become increasingly important. The Pentagon emphasized that OpenAI will focus on developing cutting-edge AI prototypes to tackle critical challenges in both combat and enterprise domains.

It’s worth noting that OpenAI isn’t alone in defense technology. Last year, startup Anduril also secured a $100 million defense contract, while OpenAI’s competitor Anthropic is collaborating with Palantir and Amazon to provide its AI models to U.S. defense and intelligence agencies. Additionally, OpenAI partnered with Anduril last year to enhance anti-drone system capabilities to counter aerial threats.
Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, stated at a summit on AI and national security that they hope to actively participate in the development of the national security sector. Although the contract amount may not be large, it holds significant meaning given OpenAI’s annualized revenue has surged to $10 billion.
In March this year, OpenAI announced a new round of financing plans, led by SoftBank Group, with an estimated investment of $40 billion. Post-financing valuation is expected to reach $300 billion. By the end of March, OpenAI’s weekly active user count had reached 500 million, reflecting its strong market performance.
This collaboration not only demonstrates OpenAI’s strength in technological innovation but also highlights the critical role of artificial intelligence in national security strategies. How AI will change the landscape of national security in the future is something we should all pay attention to.
